M is for MAGIC #SilverFir Magical moments occur at the intersections of seasons, those times when we savor the past yet leap into the future with open arms. On a fine April afternoon, I wandered alone on a mission to find a lone tree to photograph on the crest of the Cascade Mountains. The sun was shining and moss sprang to life around me. An hour into my hike I found my silver fir as snow flurries picked up around me and reminded me that the beauty of winter wasn't leaving just quite yet.  Words, photo and adventure by: @col_chuck

O is for on top of the world #HouseOfTheSun Waiting for the sun to rise at the summit of Haleakala is like a child anticipating a present under the tree. You can shake it and try to sneak a peek, but there’s no revealing the magic that is about to unravel. When the sun does make its very grand entrance, it cuts through an ocean of clouds. You truly can’t tell where the clouds end and the ocean begins. As the light rays travel across the clouds, the crater's shapes and colors come to life. The bowl of Haleakala becomes a sun soup of reds, oranges and yellows. As the light hits the ocean beyond, you stare on par at Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa an island away. Distance and space become hard to comprehend. The crowds of people that gather for this brief moment of morning gasp at the beauty and cheer in appreciation for what is one of the wonders of this world. Another day begins, but for those who greeted it at The House of the Sun, it is a holiday. Words by @upsidedownmama Photo by @col_chuck Adventure by: @upsidedownmama & @col_chuck

u is for unexpected #StormClouds Some of the most inspiring moments occur in the in the early morning hours as the sun begins her daily to daily trip across the sky. This very morning dark clouds were on the horizon, signaling a welcomed rainstorm in the middle of a very hot and dry summer. We live in a small mountain town in the shadow of the jagged peaks of the Cascade Mountains. These young granite ripples in the geology give life to our forests and our souls and they frame the view of our world as we gaze out the window. The sun plays tricks on us here, staying light late in the summer yet hiding behind the mountain much too early. If we are lucky though, in the early morning hours, as we yawn a sleepy yawn and rub our eyes, we may just catch a glimpse of her playing with color and painting the sky with her early morning light.  Word, photo and adventure by @col_chuck

N is for neverland #MauiSunrise This shot was from my own backyard on Maui where you literally rise and shine every day. It is hard to miss a sunrise and if by chance you do sleep through it, you literally MISS it. I've seen this sunrise so many times but regardless it sends me running for my camera as if it were the first. The palm fronds you are looking through on this photo my husband and I planted ourselves and now our children try to find bugs on them. There are many good vibes coming from the #MauiSunrise leggings. Adventure, Words and Photo by @upsidedownmama

T is for Take our breath away #Postcard Life in the Pacific Northwest can often be sprinkled with disorienting moments that feel as though one is living right in the middle of an old fashioned postcard. This mountain, Wedge Mountain, is our home mountain, standing proud over our little town. And this river, the Wenatchee River, is our home river, making her way to the ocean and giving life to our souls every time we gaze at her. We see these life giving forces everyday right out our backyard. We remain in awe of their magic. Every. Single. Day. No matter how long we live here. This is the thing about making the sacrifices necessary to survive in a place with such breathtaking beauty. We've often given up careers, nice houses, and convenience - but when we step out into nature she is our home. These postcards that come to life right in front of our eyes are more our home than the physical structures we sleep in. And for this greater home of magic and grandeur and beauty we will forever be grateful.  Photo and words by @col_chuck  Daily adventure by @col_chuck and @upsidedownmama

A is for adventure #PoliPoli On the slopes of Haleakala on the island of Maui is a beautiful eucalyptus forest decorated with bright orange moss and a magical mist. It is the sort of place that Peter Pan and Tinker Bell run around forever young. On this particular journey we ran into a fairy on a photo shoot in the woods and it was beyond fitting. You will have to look hard at the #PoliPoli leggings but we have hidden nine fairies throughout the leggings to really capture the adventure we had frolicking in the forest that day. At the forests edge you sit on a field that melts into a view point of the valley of Maui, the West Maui mountains, all the way to the ocean and even to other islands beyond. We gathered there with friends for sunset over a fire, the perfect ending to any adventure. Photo by @col_chuck Words by @upsidedownmama Adventure by @col_chuck & @upsidedownmama

I is for inspiration #AlpineReflections The hike to Lake Minotaur is short and steep, offering no sweeping vistas or clues to what might lie ahead. This was my last hike of the year and it's now most likely dusted with snow. It also quickly became one of my favorites the second I rounded the corner and was awarded with a clear blue alpine lake, endless huckleberry bushes and bright white granite boulders. I had the lake to myself and spent the afternoon exploring the many little trails that fringed lake. Perched above, I set out a picnic for myself and shot the photo that would become the Alpine Reflection leggings.  Photo, Words and Adventure by @col_chuck

N is for Nostalgia #PauHana Pau Hana means the time after work. Work then play…a happy hour of sorts. On the islands usually this has something to do with the surf and the sand and beautiful fragrant tropical flowers. Suddenly you are transported to Maui time, a time where quality of life is more important than the hustle and bustle. Instead of honking, cars slow and stop to wave you to go first. It is a simple life that lets go of the rat race and appreciates the moment. Instead of rushing home after work to sit on the couch, friends meet up to watch the sun go down and laugh and play. There are not a lot of complaints just a lot of #LuckyWeLiveHawaii and #MauiNoKaOi.  Leah and I collected these flowers with my children walking around my neighborhood and down to the beach. The old school surfboard was designed by a local Maui shaper @sos_shapes. #MissingMauiSomethingFierce Words by @upsidedownmama Photo by @col_chuck  Adventure by @upsidedownmama & @col_chuck

To is for today #MotherWater Mount Rainier is over 14,000 feet of dangerously beautiful. This majestic mountain sticks out over the land in Washington state marveled at by the city of Seattle and beyond. She appears to stand alone, a magnificent beast rising higher than any other mountain in Washington or the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest. She is the most heavily glaciated peak in the lower 48 states which is why we named her #MotherWater as referred to by the Native Americans.  I grew up in the valley below Mount Rainier and though I have seen her frequently in my life, I still point, stare and take a picture every time. Evacuation route signs litter the town warning us all that she will be devastating like all beautiful and amazing things have the ability to be. On this particular journey we traveled to Mount Rainier as two moms with our three children. We were early to bed and early to rise in the hopes of capturing her majesty in the morning light. At 4am we loaded the kids into the car and made our way to the location we scouted the night before. We almost abandoned our viewpoint as the fog was thick and the clouds were low. Intuition held us tight and we were rewarded with the mysterious unveiling of Mount Rainier on a perfectly reflective morning.  Words by @upsidedownmama Photo by @col_chuck Adventure by @upsidedownmama & @col_chuck

S is for rain or Shine #Anuenue I was on a rainbow quest! Searching for the perfect rainbow to put on a pair of leggings. When you aren't looking for a rainbow, they are hard to miss on Maui. But alas, the leprechauns were having a good laugh at my failed attempts. They'd tease me with the most vibrant rainbow of all when I was in a place I couldn't capture it. I was running up and down rainy roads to no avail. Finally, I got my rainbow and my kids celebrated by doing a rainbow dance under it. Rainbows make us happy and so do the #Anuenueleggings. E is for Ebb and flow #LaPush It was a perfect sunny summer day. Erin and Steph (@erinkellyart and @casa_colibri) were visiting from out of town and I had just flown in from Hawaii. We hiked to La Push on the Washington coast and set up camp right on the beach. Our evening consisted of handstanding (of course), cooking an amazing meal over the campfire (Steph is super good at wood gathering) and watching an epic sunset over the ocean as we ran around like sand crabs. The morning was equally as gorgeous. We yoga’d in the receding tide laughing and rolling in the wet sand. We had a lot of Washington adventures that week, but this was by far a united favorite.  Words and Photo by @upsidedownmama Adventure by @upsidedownmama@erinkellyart & @casa_colibri

A is for everything is Awesome #SandPiles The surf break here is called Sand Piles but my kids call it treasure beach. We take our buckets down to the shore looking for shells, rocks and drift wood. They bring their favorite finds back to the house to decorate the garden. When you think of beaches on Maui, you imagine tropical water and sandy stretches. This beach is not that. It's a little rough and rugged. Often there are gnarly winds and we frequently pick up trash. Yet it is treasure beach. There are so many idioms to say what I'm implying: Don't judge a book by its cover, beauty is only skin deep, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, there's no rose without a thorn...
